Booking choice: The cathedral and terraces combined ticket, 2 to 3 hours at your pace. Book this Tour details
The Duomo Museum is the part of the complex most visitors skip, and the part the Fabbrica is now giving away one Sunday a month. It sits at Piazza del Duomo 12, on the ground floor of the Palazzo Reale on the south side of the piazza, a two-minute walk from the security check in front of the facade. Since the 2013 rehang by Guido Canali it has been one of the better-lit museums in Milan, and one of the emptiest.
The free Sunday was announced in July 2026 as part of the Milano al Duomo programme and started on 27 September. It covers the museum. The cathedral stays ticketed that day, the terraces stay ticketed, and the museum's weekday rhythm does not change either: closed on Wednesdays, open from 10:00 the rest of the week. Below is how the Sunday works and how to build a day around it with the cathedral ticket or a guided tour.
The quick answer
The Duomo Museum is free on the last Sunday of each month from 27 September 2026, 10:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00, subject to change. Booking is compulsory on duomomilano.it and opens on the Tuesday before each Sunday, two seats per booking and three bookings a day. The cathedral and the terraces are not included.

When is the Duomo Museum free in 2026 and 2027?
On the last Sunday of each month, starting Sunday 27 September 2026, from 10:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00. The Fabbrica adds "subject to change".
The rule is simple enough to work out with a calendar, and we have done it below through the first half of 2027. Two dates deserve a note. 27 December 2026 falls inside the Christmas holidays, when Milan fills with Italian visitors and the piazza is at its busiest, so book that one the minute the Tuesday window opens. 31 January 2027 is the last Sunday of a five-Sunday month, which catches people who assume the free day is the fourth Sunday. The programme page is the place to confirm each date before you travel: Milano al Duomo, duomomilano.it.| Free Sunday | Booking opens | Note |

How does the booking work?
Online on duomomilano.it from the Tuesday before, two seats per booking and up to three bookings a day, nominal tickets, until the seats run out.
The same rules govern the whole Milano al Duomo programme. You book a timed seat for a named person; the booking is checked at the museum door at Piazza del Duomo 12, so bring the ID the Fabbrica asks for at its entrances. Two seats per booking means a couple books once; a family of five books three times. Three bookings a day is the ceiling for one account. The window opens on the Tuesday, five days ahead, which is shorter than the one-week notice for the four free-entry days. Seats left over may be released at the counter on the Sunday, and with a museum this quiet that is a more realistic hope than it is for the cathedral, but it is still a hope. Last entry is 18:00, and a walk through the rooms at a reading pace takes about an hour, so the 17:00 slots are the ones to aim for if you want the galleries to yourself.
Prefer the museum explained? The two-hour guided tour takes you through San Gottardo and the museum with a guide after the roof, any day but Wednesday, and cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Book thisWhat is inside the Duomo Museum?
Twenty-six rooms in fourteen sections: the cathedral's Treasure, then the original statues, gargoyles, stained glass, paintings, tapestries and models taken off the building since the 1300s.
The route starts with the Treasure, which belongs to the Metropolitan Chapter rather than the Fabbrica: a fifth-century ivory book cover, the five-part diptych, the tenth-century situla of Gotofredo, and Archbishop Ariberto's great gilded copper cross. Then come the statues, saints and prophets set at eye level as if in conversation, among them a giant St George from 1404 that is probably a portrait of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the duke who paid for the first decades of building. The gargoyles are the room children remember: a line of water-spouts carved as monsters and animal heads, with pinnacles decorated with monkeys, mice and moths. The stained glass has its own section, biblical panels you can study from a metre away rather than forty. Among the paintings is Tintoretto's Christ among the Doctors, and the tapestries tell the story of Moses. The architecture rooms hold the modellone, a wooden model of the whole cathedral at 1:22 begun by Bernardino Zenale in 1519 and finished in 1891, in lime and walnut. Giuseppe Perego's terracotta models for the Madonnina stand near the statue's original iron frame, taken out of her in 1967 and replaced with steel. The last rooms show the twentieth-century reliefs made for the bronze doors, including Lucio Fontana's 1952 panel recalling the bombing of the cathedral in 1943.
Does the free Sunday include the cathedral or San Gottardo?
Not as published. The free entry names the museum. The cathedral keeps its ticket, and San Gottardo, normally visited on the museum ticket, is not mentioned either way.
The Church of San Gottardo in Corte, the Visconti court chapel on Via Pecorari behind Palazzo Reale, is reached with a museum ticket on ordinary days and closes with the museum on Wednesdays. The free-Sunday wording on the Fabbrica's page covers the Museo del Duomo and says nothing about San Gottardo, so ask at the door; we would not promise it. The cathedral is a separate matter entirely. Sunday is also the day the nave is busiest with worship: Mass at 7:00, 8:00, 9:30, 11:00 in Latin, 12:30 and 17:30, Lauds at 10:30 and Vespers at 16:30, and group visits are suspended from 9:30 to 12:30 and again from 16:30.That timetable shapes the day. If you want the nave as a visitor on a free-museum Sunday, buy the cathedral ticket for the early afternoon, when the groups are let back in and the morning Masses are over, and give the museum the late slot. If you want a guide, the operator tours on this site run on Sundays but stay outside the nave during the suspension hours, which is why the Sunday departures cluster in the afternoon.
How does a free museum Sunday pair with a cathedral or terraces ticket?
Buy the part you are missing. A cathedral ticket plus the free museum covers the inside; a terraces ticket plus the free museum covers the roof; the combined ticket already includes the museum, so save it for another day.
The Fabbrica sells the nave and the roof separately, and the museum is where the saving sits on these Sundays. The table shows the sensible pairings. One warning on the combined ticket: it includes the museum and San Gottardo and is valid for the booked day and the next, so buying it for a free-museum Sunday wastes the museum part. Buy it for a Saturday and Monday pair instead, or pick one of the single tickets. The guided tours sort this differently. The Milanoguida tour lists a guided visit of the museum and San Gottardo after the roof, and the Crown Tours listing gives priority entry to both, so neither needs the free Sunday. The Museum Voyage tour does not mention the museum at all, which makes it the natural partner for a free Sunday afternoon in the galleries.
| You hold | Add on a free Sunday | Result | Cancellation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cathedral ticket | Free museum, booked | Nave plus museum; no roof | Non-refundable |
| Terraces ticket | Free museum, booked | Roof plus museum; no nave | Non-refundable |
| Skip-the-line tour with rooftop | Free museum, booked | Guided nave, roof by the stairs, then the museum | Free up to 24 hours before |
| Combined ticket | Nothing: the museum is already in it | Better used on another two days | Non-refundable |

Fifty-five minutes inside with a guide, then the roof by the stairs on your own time. It does not touch the museum, so the free Sunday fills the gap. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Book this Tour detailsWhat else should you know before you go?
Closed on Wednesdays, every week. Open from 10:00 the other six days. The entrance is at Piazza del Duomo 12, not the cathedral door.
People arrive at the security tent in front of the facade and ask for the museum. It is behind you and to the left as you face the cathedral, inside the Palazzo Reale courtyard, with its own ticket office, Biglietteria 2, which also sells cathedral tickets and is a quieter place to buy them than the piazza counter. The museum is on the ground floor and step-free from the courtyard; the Fabbrica's accessibility page lists a Baby Pit-stop inside and tactile tours with Braille boards. Two more things. Wednesday is the closing day whatever else is happening, which in the 2026-27 season includes Epiphany, 6 January 2027, a Wednesday: do not plan the museum for that holiday. And the museum keeps the bags rule of the whole complex, so leave luggage at the station; there is no cloakroom at the cathedral and the Fabbrica points to a paid storage partner instead. The visiting guide has the full list of what stays outside.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book the free Sunday at the Duomo Museum?
Yes. Booking is compulsory on duomomilano.it and opens on the Tuesday before each last Sunday, two seats per booking and up to three bookings a day. Unbooked seats may be released at the museum ticket office on the day, but that is not something to count on.
Is the cathedral free on the museum's free Sunday?
No. The free entry covers the Museo del Duomo. The nave keeps its ticket for visitors and is free for worship through the north door, as on every day. The four free-entry days for the cathedral in 2026-27 are separate dates.
How long does the Duomo Museum take?
About an hour at a reading pace through the 26 rooms, longer if you linger over the modellone and the glass. Last entry on the free Sunday is 18:00, so a 17:00 arrival is the latest comfortable one.
Is the Duomo Museum open on Wednesdays?
No. Wednesday is the weekly closing day for the museum and for San Gottardo, including when a holiday falls on a Wednesday, as Epiphany does in January 2027. The cathedral and the terraces stay open.
