Cathedral and Rooftop Terrace Guided Tour

About this experience

Six languages is the headline. The listing offers a live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese or Russian, as a small group or a private tour, which makes this the Duomo option for families and friends who do not share a first language. The tour enters the cathedral by a separate skip-the-line entrance, covers the interior with the guide, then takes the lift up to the terraces for the walk among the spires. An audio system is included so you hear the guide on the roof.

The museum is the part to read twice. The listing names priority entry to the Duomo Museum and the Church of San Gottardo in Corte, and its itinerary marks both as self-guided, so treat them as a pass you use after the guided part, not as a guided visit. Both are closed on Wednesdays. The archaeological area is not mentioned. The listing also says you may need stairs to come down from the terrace, and rules the tour out for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments and anyone with a fear of heights or vertigo.

The group meets in front of the Mondadori Megastore on Piazza del Duomo; the guide wears a purple Crown Tours shirt or jacket, and the listing gives Piazza del Duomo 4 as the starting address. Skip-the-line, the listing says plainly, does not bypass security. Backpacks, strollers, glass and alcohol are refused, knees and shoulders must be covered, and children need a passport or ID. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later.

How it runs

  1. BeforePurple shirt, Mondadori

The Mondadori Megastore is on Piazza del Duomo. Look for the guide in a purple Crown Tours shirt or jacket in front of it. Bring passports or ID cards for any children in the group.

  2. 0:00A separate entrance

The group enters the cathedral by a skip-the-line entrance. The security check is still there; the listing is explicit that skip-the-line does not bypass it.

  3. 0:10The interior

The guide covers the Gothic columns, the marble statues and the stained glass in your language, with headsets on the audio system. Allow about 45 minutes.

  4. 0:55The lift

Up by the lift to the first terrace. The listing notes a few steps at the top, and says you may need stairs to come down.

  5. 1:05The roof with the guide

The walk among the spires and statues, the flying buttresses and the Madonnina on the main spire above you, with the guide's stories in your ear and Milan spread out below.

  6. 1:45Museum pass

The guided part ends. Your priority entry covers the Duomo Museum at Piazza del Duomo 12 and San Gottardo in Corte, on your own, open from 10:00 and closed on Wednesdays.

Tips before you book

  • Pick the language at booking, not on the day. The listing's options are set per language and the guide who turns up speaks the one you chose.
  • Carry ID for the children. The listing asks for a passport or ID card for them, and the Fabbrica's tickets are nominal.
  • Swap the backpack for a small bag. Backpacks are on the listing's refused list and there is no cloakroom at the cathedral.
  • Use the museum pass straight after the tour, any day but Wednesday. The museum is a two-minute walk and the priority entry saves the second queue.
  • Ask the guide about the way down before you go up. The listing says stairs may be needed to come down from the terrace.
